THE CLIMATE EMERGENCY: AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT
by Chris Philpott | 24 Mar 2026
2025 is a significant year for climate change as scientists have warned that this is the last year we have to reduce emissions or face a changing climate we cannot control. We need to act now. Having studied the climate emergency since 2015, when I retired, this book is the one I would like to have found myself.
This book is written from the perspective of a “concerned citizen” as I am not an expert but have a background in 45 years education and over 40 years as a green activist, locally and nationally.
Unlike most books on the climate emergency my book explains what it is in plain English, offers solutions and describes outcomes if we don’t act. I am trying to inspire and empower you to act. We need to change responses of hoping it goes away, denying it's happening as it does not affect me, being distracted in social media silos, or being slaves to an economic system to survive.
You are up against powerful foes of fossil fuel corporations and corrupt governments who control the media to make sure you are ignorant and inactive. They carry on wrecking our climate and destroying our future for the profits of the rich elite minority.
In response I have created my own media through this book backed up by this website with videos.

With the changing g climate growing food will be become more difficult. All crops have tolerance to weather patterns. Yet there is extreme heat and flooding. What we have lost in modern culture is the skills and knowledge to grow our own food and this channel seeks to redress that. The most sustainable way to grow food which is climate friendly is to grow organically. This system of growing on any scale helps to maintain ecological systems which support us as humans.
I have been around growing organic food for many years by myself and also with pupils in schools. So on this channel I share my knowledge and skills to empower you to do the same. In areas where I do not have the necessary skills and knowledge I will seek out those who do so you too can learn from them. I will cover the whole process from feeding the soil, seed sowing to harvesting the crop.
The channel will also explore how you could help invest in and support growing organic food on farms in your area.
Although I do not have knowledge or expertise in this area I will seek out people who do to share videos on this channel.
It is not possible of course to grow all your own food so I explore where to purchase it at a reasonable price. The emphasis throughout is to buy local eat local avoiding food miles whilst maintaining your healthy body. I explore buying food in bulk to lower costs which I have done for many years. I also show examples of buying food in your local whole food shop
I will seek out experts who can explain how you can store some of your harvested food. I explore preserving food by drying it and pickling it.
To live a climate friendly life it is best to eat little meat and dairy or avoid it altogether as explained in the book that accompanies this channel, producing meat and dairy adds to greenhouse gas emissions. I have cooked organic foods for years and will along with others share videos of me making the substitute for traditional “meat and 2 veg dishes”.

Although I do not have knowledge or skills in this area I will seek out those that do to make videos on this topic. We will visit producing your own solar energy and storing it. I will explore small scale systems that can be moved around but also installing solar energy on your roof. This will cover the whole process from buying solar panels, installing them and battery storage of energy produced. Where possible there will be a breakdown of the costs and savings involved. I will also cover solar heating systems for water.
I will produce videos on how to install wind turbines. This will involve analysis of where it is most effective to place them and how much energy is produced and what energy savings are made.
I will produce videos on what they are, how they work, what is involved in installing them. Where possible I will cover the cost of installation and energy savings.
I will cover basic ways you can save energy being wasted in the home from insulating lofts, and walls, draught proofing doors and windows, and installing double glazing.
I will cover the importance of setting thermostats at the optimal level to save energy. I will also instruct on how much energy electrical appliances use and effective ways to cut down their energy consumption.

We all need to travel but sometimes it adds allot to our carbon budget, especially travelling by car using hydro carbons as the fuel.
I have travelled by bike for many years and found it maintained my physical health and cut travelling costs. I will cover buying a used bike and what to look for. I will cover basic bike maintenance in terms of regular servicing required and mending punctures. From my own experience of the need for safety I will cover tips for visible cycle gear and suggestions on the most effective types of lights to use.
I will cover what to look for when purchasing an electric bike referring to my own experience of using them. I will explore decisions about battery life, restrictions on distances travelled, and where possible the costs involved. I will cover what servicing needs there are.
My videos will cover finding out how an electric car works and saving costs of running it.

I have been involved in promoting recycling in a local community group. We were pioneering in promoting the recycling of aluminium cans. I wrote and performed a recycling road show called “Mr. Rubbish” which I took round local schools and performed at a local festival. I am passionate about recycling plastics and one YouTube video will focus on how to identify the 7 different types of plastics. The others will focus on recycling glass and metals. I will also demonstrate how you can constantly reuse plastic bags. One video will focus on reusing all types of containers to store food or top up cleaning products by visiting the local “Zero Waste shop.”
Some videos will look into buying products that all the parts can be recycled or replaced such as mobile phones and hand crafter items.
One video focuses on our local reuse centre which shows how clothing, bedding, footwear, toys, gardening equipment, electronic equipment, cutlery and crockery, books and records can be collected and reused by selling them in their shop. This is great because there are many poor people who cannot afford new and apart from raising funds for an environmental charity it prevents useable stuff going to landfill.
I will also video local charity shops which offer pre-loved clothing at affordable prices. When in education I always bought my shirts from these shops. These charity shops raised funds for good causes such as OXFAM or save the children fund.
I have always supported our local Repair Cafe and one video will feature this. This is staffed by volunteers with knowledge of how to repair electronic goods and electrical items. They are also experts in repairing clothes which I have used many times.
I also want to highlight how many resources are wasted on “fast fashion” when sustainable alternatives using natural materials are there. I hope to interview someone who was a graduate from the London School of fashion as she is an expert on sustainable fashion.

Using my own experience I will cover how it is possible to create a larger Nature Reserve if the opportunity arises. This will show how to raise funds from local businesses and charities, the planning process and what species of shrubs and trees provide the best food sources for insects, animals and birds. I will show how you can get help from people and organisations to plant the reserve. I will illustrate this with videos of the 2 nature serves I creaked in 2 schools. And visits to other larger projects.
I will also show examples of how to create a small nature reserve in your garden or at least grow climate friendly plants. Referring to my own experience I will include coverage of what; plants attract wildlife, how to make a wildlife pond how to properly plant trees.

There is no doubt that as the climate changes it produces stress in our lives and evidence suggests this is now a global problem. Here I cover therapies which are affordable and effective to deal with stress and anxiety generated by the changing climate. Where possible topics are backed up by plug in videos but certainly by relevant websites and recommended books. The list of areas covered is below.

If things become really tough and money starts to be in short supply as the economy is affected by the changing climate we may need to resort to bartering of goods and services. This section explores that. Where possible topics are backed up by plug in videos but certainly by relevant websites and recommended books. List of areas is below.
